2nd Annual Anti-Trafficking CSOs Coordination Meeting in Kenya

The 2nd Annual Anti-Trafficking Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Coordination Meeting took place on 28 January 2020 at the Hilton Hotel, Nairobi. 41 participants attended the meeting, including 29 CSOs and 5 representatives of the government of Kenya (GoK). The meeting was co-hosted by Stop the Traffik Kenya (STTK) and the Better Migration Management Programme (BMM) implemented by GIZ.
The overall aim of the workshop was (1) to empower Kenyan anti-trafficking CSOs to coordinate their upcoming activities and (2) to support the communication and planning between anti-trafficking CSOs and government actors in order to strengthen the ‘4th P’ in anti-trafficking, partnership, which is an important pillar to ensure prevention, protection and prosecution is successful.

Stop the Traffik Kenya shared the names of 2020’s Focal Points who were nominated to take lead in matters dealing with Prevention, Protection, and Prosecution in Kenya. They are:

Prevention: Paul Adhoch, Trace Kenya and Nimo Mohamed, Cadle of Hope Foundation
Protection: Stacey Alugo, HAART and Florence Keya, Maisha Homes
Prosecution: Mutuku Nguli, CHTEA and Beatrice Njeri, CREAW

Liberty Shared was asked to present the risky migration and human trafficking routes data collection exercise that was conducted in collaboration with STTK. During the presentation, Nimo Ali, the Director for Candle of Hope highlighted how the data has helped to inform some of their organization’s interventions. The data collection exercise helped Candle of Hope to gather human trafficking statistics from an assortment of sources by collecting and analyzing various human trafficking data. It improved their understanding of the causes, routes, trends, and risks involved in human trafficking thereby informing them in project development and intervention. Through the collected data, they could identify hotspots, which in return helped to plan future targets and intervention. The exercise also helped with the identification of the particular CSOs and the government officials that are responsible for dealing with issues of human trafficking.
